On Farm Auction

On Farm Auction

Garth ShawI regard my strength as a Ram Breeder, as breeding structurally sound high genetic merit rams, growing them out and presenting them for sale.

As our ram breeding business has grown over the last 33 years I have found the aggressive marketing required in todays environment challenging.

We made the decision 6 years ago to get the professional help of our stock firm PGG Wrightson to assist us in marketing and selling our rams. I must say I have absolutely no regrets in this decision.

This year’s On-Farm sale is on 19 December 2008. We have an Open Day on 5 December 2008 when all sale rams are on display as well as lambs sired by our rams.

The sale is By-Description - meaning the rams are penned for inspection but do not go through the sale ring. They are auctioned with full production data displayed. This sale gives all clients, new and old, an equal opportunity to purchase rams. We do not sell rams at any other sales. All are available at our On-Farm sale.

The quality of the rams put up for sale is at my discretion. I only put forward rams that I would be happy to use myself as a commercial farmer. 340 quality 2 tooth rams will be for sale this year. All rams are vet tested prior to sale. We are a brucellosis accredited free flock.

Our sale gives all farmers an ideal opportunity to purchase Maternal Rams that will produce ewe flocks with Fertility, Survival, Growth, Meat, Wool, Disease Resistance, Constitution and Conformation that will be profitable and enjoyable to work with.

Our Terminal Rams mated to daughters of our Maternal Rams will produce fast growing high meat yielding export lambs.

ON FARM AUCTION

Our next On Farm Auction is on the 18th December

I have always believed Texel sheep would play a major role in the maternal side of the NZ Sheep industry. While Garth has focussed on genetics, he has also bred sound well rounded sheep at Wharetoa, which I believe gives them a significant advantage.

Tim Story (owner Jedburgh) and I are very impressed with the figures, grazing ability, mean kill data, resilience, fertility and mothering ability, health and general physical soundness of Wharetoa Texels.

I believe in Texel sheep and firmly believe that Wharetoa Texels and Texel cross sheep are the way ahead on Jedburgh Station.
